Our Story

Why we choose Wee Care Pediatrics and Stacy Crill…

When our oldest son was 9 months old, we started to notice that he stopped all communication with us. We brought it up to his pediatrician at his 1 year well visit. We were told that he needed tubes for his recurrent ear infections and that he would be back to talking within weeks. We embraced this recommendation, and tubes were placed by his ENT. Sadly, this did not yield the results that we desired. Arie continued to regress in his communication and social skills. By 15 months, Arie was not responding to his name, and he could not perform 1 step directions. We were to the point we could not leave him alone for even a second. He needed constant supervision. He loved to play outside but he couldn’t understand that he couldn’t play in the street, couldn’t play in the snow without shoes on and that he couldn’t drink bubbles. He developed an obsession with cars. When attending a youth soccer game, one of us would have to accompany Arie in the parking lot because he would spend 45 minutes circling cars in the parking lot. He would start at one end, circle the entire car and then move on to the next. When he reached the last car, he would then start over. Denying him of this task resulted in him kicking and screaming until he got his way. When this was brought to his pediatrician's attention, she told us to give it time and that eventually kids outgrow this behavior. If he did not, at the age of two, they would send him to the CDD at the University of Iowa for further evaluation. At that time, there was a waiting list for children to be seen at the CDD. It would take about a year from the start of the referral to the first appointment. There was no way that we could continue this way.

Out of desperation, we contacted Stacy Crill, knowing she had just completed NP school for pediatrics, and asked for her opinion. Stacy, at this time, was working for the University of Iowa, Child Health Specialty Clinic, with children who have disabilities. She arranged for us to see her the next week and administered a standardized assessment for autism that focused on communication, social interaction, play and restricted and/or repetitive behaviors in children. After the performance of this exam, it did come to light that Arie was on the spectrum and Stacy started right away to get us the additional help we needed to “retrain Arie’s brain.” She also discovered that Arie had a few physical deformities that needed medical attention. This resulted in a referral to Peds Urology at the University of Iowa and corrective surgery was recommended. Keep in mind, Arie had attended all his age-recommended well child visits with the same medical doctor/practice and these concerns were never once mentioned. Stacy continued to see Arie every 3 months until she left the University of Iowa. During this time, she discovered that Arie was struggling with anxiety and was able to find a medication that controlled it so he could participate in all of his new therapies.

Arie is now 7 years old. Two years ago, he graduated from his IEP’s (except speech) through the school system. Do not get us wrong, it was our job as parents to get Arie to this point but without Stacy teaching us about the diagnosis and giving us the resources we needed to get him the help he needed, we never would have been able to succeed and Arie would more than likely be non-verbal.

Over the past six months, our family has opened up about how autism has affected our family. We are now ready to take the next step and provide a service to other families with not only autism, but other physical or mental disabilities. Stacy’s early intervention and resources set us up for success. In all honesty, Arie is our reason for starting a partnership with Stacy and Erich Crill and opening Wee Care Pediatrics. But the services and education that Stacy can provide to Southeast Iowa children is a very close second.
